Following along with some great basketball instructions from a speaker I organized to bring in who played D1 basketball, Jamie Hayiga, USC player and professional athlete. She gave an inspirational speech about her journey, she gave a really great speech to the girls.
I believe it is strongly important to connect with middle schoolers on their way to high school because bonding with them allows a greater chance for them to join the basketball community as they enter high school. Its very important to show younger girls how basketball can change ones life and how basketball isn't just joining a team its joining a family.
Creating camaraderie between teammates is so important because basketball is so much more than just a game. My goal was to make my team and other teams have better chemistry and a greater love for basketball by bringing teams together and creating events which we could be ourselves outside of each of our school's basketball court.
The basketball community is normally a bunch of teams who play each other but rarely hangout outside of the basketball court. One of my goals was to get the girls in the basketball community to bond and create a larger basketball community by holding events that were open to any middle and/or high school girls who were interested in getting to know each other off the court.
There are so many places in our community that could be brought together to make amazing things happen. I was able to use the platform of my Girl Scout Gold project to reach out to places in our community and ask if we could work together to make the basketball community a better place. Everyone in the community was excited and willing to help.
